“I get a kick out of football practice — it energises me. Beyond that, my barriers faded; I’m finally doing what the boys do!”

Aron Strauss, 13

Homework club

The girl who doesn't have a sticker collection. Doesn’t have novelty rubbers, squishies, or any collection. She never brings cool snacks. Her water bottle is scratched and dulled, tinged with yellow. And her backpack trended four years ago.

She doesn't join the BBQ or arcade night. No swimming, no art lessons. She doesn’t even shape her brows! She hesitates to volunteer with friends because she’s never hung out before.

A girl’s world, with the looming void of childhood joys.

At school, she’s got the prickling feeling of lack, the bitter taste of not belonging, the murmuring pity buzzing over her shoulders. And she dares to hope she needn’t be dredged in disadvantage forever.

Our after-school program gives every  child the chance to break through, find their place, and see their future.

Her hub to hang out  |  Her spot for snacks  |  Her area for art  |  Her place to perform  |

Her realm of resources | Her space to stretch skills | Her go-to for group games  |

Her epicentre of experiences.

Snacks

A snack gives him the stability he craves. His growth needs extra nourishment that a low-income family can’t always afford. When food is offered to him, the relief of not needing to ask helps him relax. He joins in, convinced he’s enough.

Hangout Hub

Group games make her feel giddy, and she forms friendships in a space that lets her be herself and breathe. Here, she’s part of things. Doing homework in company is a huge relief, and inside jokes balm her soul in ways she’s only dreamed of.

Skills Development

Self-expression glows in whatever she creates. Her feelings fall onto the canvas in beautiful strokes. She designs soft furnishings to cosy up the club’s lounge, sources and builds props for a team performance. She learns video animation.

Resources & Trips

With craft supplies, games, and books from every category, he has the tools to explore and express through all program activities. He joins outdoor sports, hikes, and historic visits. The vibrant moments he shares with friends rejuvenate him.

"After-school activities spared me the pressure to host or impress—and the shame of not being able to. I could show up without planning the fun, making the calls, or explaining myself."

 Frieda Lipschutz

Hope, hope, hooray!
